A memorable event of my first year in Sweden is still in my heart. It happened in a nursing home in Sweden. Simon and Sara, a retired Swedish citizen, lived in the nursing home. Both of them are 60 plus years old. My university summer is three months off. I came to Stockholm to do summer job. I got a job in an old age home.
My job here was to help the elderly with their daily work. Walking around the park in a wheelchair was part of the job. Talking to the elders about various topics was a good opportunity for me to learn Swedish. Then I got a wonderful opportunity to know their social and emotional aspects.
Simon and Sarah have been married for almost 50 years. One of their sons, Andes, works outside Stockholm. I don't see much with my parents. Simon and Sara often talk to me about their son. I had just come from Bangladesh, so seeing their compassion for their son reminded me of my own family.
Feeding Simon and Sarah a variety of medications while sleeping every day was another part of my job. I often noticed that they would tell me, Rahman, you go away, we will take medicine and go to sleep later. I never doubted their work, yet I told my boss one day.
The boss said, ‘Well if they don’t forget to take the medicine themselves then there is no problem. But you see, if they don't take medicine by mistake, then of course you take medicine and go home. ' I never saw them forget to take the medicine or the medicine left on the table remained on the table.
Everyone likes Simon and Sarah. I have been working for more than two months. So a good relationship has developed with everyone. Suddenly one morning Simon and Sarah are knocking on the door but they are not opening the door. What do I do? I brought the extra key and opened the room and saw Simon and Sara lying in their hands holding each other's hands.
What's the matter What happened? No one can say anything. Doctors and police came and started the investigation, they also asked me a thousand questions. I said what I know. After various tests, it was found out that they had died after taking overdose drugs. But how did you get so much medicine? The investigation revealed that they died after accumulating drugs for months and consuming all the drugs at once.
To those who help Simon and Sarah, including me, our job is to serve them and obey their commands. Since both of them have healthy brains, neither of us had any doubts. Even then, due to the deaths of the two, some new rules were introduced in the old age home. One of them is the direct help in most cases of drug use. Suddenly, after so many years, I remember that day.
Today a news item on Swedish television. In many countries of the world, if someone does not want to live in a state of severe illness, some professional doctors help them to die with medicine. Switzerland is one of them. Earlier this year, an ALS patient in Sweden contacted a Swiss doctor about the death.
When everything is fine, Kovid-19 comes and makes everything random. Also known as ALS (amyotropic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a neurological or neurological disease. It gets worse over time and becomes even more painful. The disease causes disability, as it destroys nerve cells.
The disease begins with slight symptoms. As with walking and respiratory failure, it tends to increase. Swedish This patient does not want to survive in the agony of suffering. Sweden has decided not to help anyone die, keeping in mind their morals and ethics, which is why this ALS patient from Sweden planned to die outside the country.
A few days ago, a retired doctor from Sweden broke the Swedish rules and helped that ALS patient to die. Retired doctors think, if someone wants to take his own life voluntarily, why should he be tied up? If someone wants to die rather than survive, a professional doctor should help.
There has been a lot of fighting in Sweden over the issue. Let's see what the Swedish Parliament decides in the end and what punishment the retired doctor gets! It remains to be seen whether the doctor's medical license will be revoked or he will be jailed.
Many religious people wonder if Sweden will change the law to allow patients to die voluntarily. Everyone hoping to see the end of the incident. About 36 years ago today, despite Simon and Sara's untimely death at their own risk, the Swedish nation has not changed the law, let's see what happens this time.
There is always a reason behind the death of the human race. Now if one does not want to live on the brink of death, it may be a matter of rethinking. But those who believe in religion know that taking one's own life is a great sin.
